8820 Publication Design

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12              Year Course

Prerequisite: B or better in English         10 Credits

Permission: Application Required           UC, CSU

This course is for students who are interested in the history and principles of graphic design for publication media. Students will explore two-dimensional real-world ap­plications of design. Students will develop skills in artistic perception, critiquing and applications of design strategies through experiences that emphasize solving visual art problems. Students will gain a working knowledge of page layout, photography and desktop publishing using InDesign® to produce the yearbook. Students will also be involved in advertisement sales, deadline production and computer skills. Students will be selected by the Publication Design instructor.

 

9623 Introduction to Computer Programming

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12          Semester Course

Prerequisite: None         5 Credits
Permission: None

The content of this course includes: An Introduction to Computers; How Computers are Programmed; Entering, Compiling, and Running a Program; Variables and Constants; Loops; Functions; and Math Operations. The student's class time involves the use of the computer on a daily basis. This course satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

 

9653 Computer Graphics

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12          Semester Course

Prerequisite: None         5 Credits
Permission: None

 

This course will introduce students to programming and graphic design using a painting and drawing application. Students use a set of computer tools to make drawings, paint­ings, designs, and other graphic work. Students use HyperStudioo to make programs consisting of several cards. Each card will be designed by the student using a set of tools. HyperStudio® makes extensive use of graphics and sound. This course satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

 

9663 Desktop Publishing

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12          Semester Course

Prerequisite: None         5 Credits
Permission: None

This course will acquaint the student with the preparation and production of publications such as brochures, booklets, newsletters, etc. The class will be taught on Macintosh® computers using InDesign® software. The class will focus on layout design and will equip students with the skills necessary for the preparation of the yearbook and the school newspaper. This course satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

This course is designed to provide students with a thorough knowledge of and ability to use the Internet. Students will learn the structural, technical and cultural (depth & range) aspects of the Internet. Course content includes an introduction to Browsers, URL's, Electronic Mail, advanced search techniques, Bookmarks, and Website evaluation, and Netiquette. This course satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

 

9683 WebPage Development and Application

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12          Semester Course

Prerequisites: None       5 Credits
Permission: None

WebPage Development is designed to teach the core technologies and fundamental use of the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). This course will expose students to the basic syntactical, technical and publishing aspects of HTML. Students will gain hands-on experience creating HTML tags, tag attributes, text fields, tables, hyperlinks, and graphic importing. This course satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

 

9633 Computer Animation

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12  Semester Course

Prerequisite: None         5 Credits
Permission: None

This course will show students a means of adapting artistic skills to electronic media and the use of graphics in computing. The student will animate pictures as animated gift and make movies wilth Macromedia Flash®• The student will study the elements and principle of art, color, and digital design as well as image creation, motion sequencing, and multimedia presentation. This class satisfies the computer graduation requirement.

Computer Use Policy

 

Code Of Conduct For Use Of Computers - General Statement

 

St. Mary's High School is responsible for securing its network and computing systems in a reasonable degree against unauthorized access and/or abuse, while making them accessible for authorized and legitimate users. This responsibility includes informing users of expected standards of conduct and the punitive measures for not adhering to them. Any attempt to violate the provisions of this policy will result in disciplinary action.

 

 

General Computer Policy        

 

Once the user accesses the network and computer systems the user is solely responsible for all actions taken.

  • Students are responsible for their work saved on library computers. A backup of work is recommended.

  • Deleting, examining, copying, or modification of files is prohibited.

  • Attempting to evade or change network security is prohibited.

  • Use of facilities for commercial purposes is prohibited.

  • Any unauthorized, deliberate action which damages or disrupts or alters a computing systems' normal performance is prohibited.

  • The copying of copyrighted materials without express written permission is prohibited.

  • Attempts to gain unauthorized access or interfere with the regular operation of local or remote systems are prohibited.

  • Usage of St. Mary's computing facilities for any purpose other than those

  • prescribed or explicitly permitted by the high school is prohibited.

  • Sending harassing, obscene or other threatening messages through the Website

  • is prohibited.

  • Users of the computer facilities shall obey the instructions of the supervisors.

  • Actions which disrupt or adversely effect the use of the facilities of other users

  • are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to: eating, drinking, excessive

  • noise or playing games.

  • Engaging in aggressive behavior or abusive language is prohibited.

  • Representing Saint Mary's High School under false pretenses on the school's Website is prohibited.
