Men’s Basketball: NorCal Division III boys: Bishop O'Dowd 55, St. Mary's-Stockton 31

 

The Rams season came to an end in the second round of NorCal Play as Bishop O'Dowd beat St. Mary’s 55-31. Alex Simmons had eight points and five rebounds while Josh Harper and Sean Fenner, two of the top Ram scorers were held to a total of 9. The Dragons defense forced the Rams to shoot from outside. That didn't work at St. Mary's shot just 3-for-26 from 3-point land.

Men’s Basketball Playoffs: St. Mary’s 53, Foothill 50

 

St. Mary’s built up a 15 point lead by halftime, but came out, as coach Green stated “lethargic” allowing the Cougars to outshoot them 15-5 in the third quarter. With 1:11 left, the score was 50-47, then St. Mary’s got a layup by Sean Fenner with 16 seconds followed by a free throw from Justin Cox to stave off Foothill 53-50. Fenner scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds, Simmons scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Harper had five steals and six assists

Men’s Basketball Playoffs: Sacramento 85, St. Mary’s 72

 

The St. Mary’s men’s team fought a tough game against Sacramento  with Josh Harper putting in 20 for 23 from the free-throw line and a total of 22 points,  John Smith 14 and Sean Fenner 10.

 

An 11-0 run gave the Rams a brief lead, 15-14, but Sacramento came back. However the Rams pulled within 6 at 78-72 with 1:01 left in the game, but could not pull any closer as they lost 85-72.  St. Mary’s will now play in the expanded format against a team to be announced on March 9th.

Men's Basketball: St. Mary's 61, Rio Americano 56

 

The Rams had a big first-half 21-3 run, took a 36-28 lead into the half and held on to win 61-56 in a game that brought the crowd to its feet in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III game Friday at Morelli Gym. Justin Cox had 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead the No. 4 Rams, who advance to Wednesday's semifinals at Cosumnes River College.

 

Men’s Basketball: St. Mary’s 70, No. 13 El Dorado 55

 

The Rams put together a large lead, gave it up, then fought back to ultimately beat El Dorado 70-55 and advance to the next round of playoffs. St. Mary’s  had four players score in double figures. They will host No. 5 Rio Americano in the next round.

 

Justin Cox scored 20 points for St. Mary’s. T Josh Harper had 16 Alex Simmons put in 14 points and Sean Fenner had 10. The Rams made 7 of 10 free throws down the stretch in the victory.

Men’s Basketball: St. Mary’s 61, Tokay 30. TCAL Champions

 

The Rams completed an undefeated leagu season and secured the TCAL Championship with a powerful showing as they downed the Tigers 61-30 at Tokay.  St. Mary’s record is 20-7, 10-0 TCAL.

 

Men’s Basketball: St. Mary’s 57, Stagg 50

 

It took a rally, but the Rams came back against Stagg to remain unbeaten in league play. The Delta Kings led by 11 at halftime, but St. Mary’s came back to get a 57-50 win. Josh Harper scored 14 points and Sean Fenner had 12.

Men’s Basketball: St. Mary’s 53,McNair 30

 

On Senior Night,  Rams senior Kyle Calder scored six points on two 3-pointers in his first game

since being diagnosed with a heart condition approximately one month ago. Alex Simmons and Sean Fenner each had 10 points in the 53-30 win over McNair that gave St. Mary’s at least a share in the TCAL championship.

Men's Basketball: St. Mary's 75, West 58

 

The Rams took a firm hold on first place in the TCAL with a strong showing against the Wolfpack in a league game. St. Mary’s scoring drive in the second and third quarters shifted the pace of the game in the Rams’ favor. After that, foul trouble cost the Wolf Pack as the Rams sank 16 of 22 free throws in the second half, 27 of 44 for the night.

Playing at Morelli Gym, Sean Fenner had 18 points and eight rebounds. and Josh Harper had13 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists to lead The Rams to a 53-41 win over the Vikings. St. Mary’s had 16 steals with its high pressure press.

Josh Harper  barely missed a triple-double against West while leading the Rams with 19 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and two steals in a 71-49  victory at Morelli Gym. The win improves St. Mary’s to 11-7, 2-0 in the Tri-City Athletic League.

The TCAL opener for the Rams brought on stiff competition from the Vikings, causing the game to go into overtime.  A second overtime was averted when and Edison player made a buzzer shot, but within the two point area rather than the three point zone giving St. Mary’s a razor-thin win.

At St. Mary’s, despite a strong first quarter lead, the Rams  couldn’t keep their momentum in a loss to the Golden Eagles. John Smith scored 12 points, and Josh Harper had 11 and seven steals for the Rams in the 54-51 loss.

Josh Harper Named Record Athlete of the Week for January 6, 2010

 

The Record named Josh Harper as its male “Athlete of the Week” for January 6th. The quote was: “ St. Mary’s basketball The senior guard helped the Rams reach the finals of the 20th MaxPreps Holiday Classic last week. He averaged 14 points and four steals to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Then on Saturday, he had 15 points, six boards and five steals in a 61-52 win over Lincoln.

Playing in the championship game of the 20th MaxPreps Holiday Classic the Rams lost to Torrey Pines High School 63-58 to take second place. Josh Harper was named to the all-tournament team.

In the second round of the Max Preps Torrey Pines Tournament in San Diego, Justin Cox scored a game-high 13 points while Josh Harper put in 10, beating Cowichan of British Columbia 50-33 and to advance the Rams to the championship game of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High.

The Rams, playing in the Torrey Pines Tournament in San Diego got 23 points from Josh Harper as they downed La Jolla 69-59 in the first round of the tournament.

St. Mary’s was tournament champion at the Cosumnes Oaks Tournament in Elk Grove as Sean Fenner scored 16 points and was named tournament MVP as the Rams.

The Rams  advanced to the championship of the Cosumnes Oaks Tournament  by beating Lodi 51-20. The championship game will be at 6 p.m. today. Josh Harper scored 10 points to lead St. Mary's.

Men’s Basketball: St. Mary's 68, Beyer 28

 

In a non-league contest at Anthony Morelli Gym, the Rams came out strong and kept rolling against the Patriots, to win 68-28. Every member of the St. Mary’s squad played in the game, led by Justin Cox and Keaton Burlington who scored 10 points apiece in the win.

Playing at Morelli Gym on St. Mary’s campus, the Rams began slowly, falling behind 16-6 in the first quarter, then began a steady march, taking the lead at 20-19 and never looking  back as they beat Natomas 78-57. Five Rams scored double figures in the win.

In the loser’s bracket at the Fr. Berry Tournament in Carmichael, the Rams lost to Strake-Jesuit of Houston, Texas 68-454. Sean Fenner had 13 points and six rebounds for St. Mary’s. The Rams will play  St. Bonaventure of Ventura in the seventh-place game at 2 p.m. on December 5th. St. Mary’s is  0-2.

 

Men's Basketball: Jesuit 75, St. Mary's 48

 

At the Fr. Berry Tournament, Jesuit outscored the Rams  28-6 in the second quarter in a season-opening loss at Jesuit High. John Smith led St. Mary's with 17 points. The Rams play Strake-Jesuit of Houston, Texas at 4:30 p.m. today.

At St. Mary’s, John Smith scored 13 points to lead the Rams to a 58 to 34 victory over Chavez in the annual foundation game.
