Women's Basketball: Nike Tournament of Champions :St. Mary’s 65, Buford (Ga.) 43

Stockton Record

St. Mary’s got stronger as the Nike Tournament of Champions wore on this week, good news for coach Tom Gonsalves and bad news for the rest of California.

The Rams, the seventh-ranked team by ESPNHS, finished the tournament 2-2 after a 65-43 victory over Buford (Ga.) on Thursday afternoon. It was a repeat of last season, when the Rams (4-2) won their final two Nike games before winning 25 games en route to a third consecutive state championship.

It may not be quite that easy again — the Rams (4-2) play at San Diego on Jan. 3 and La Jolla Country Day on Jan. 4, but Gonsalves and senior guard Regina Camera said winning the final two games here was a good launching point. “We did improve, which was the main goal,” Camera said. “Personally, I wanted to go at least 2-2 in the tournament, and we did that, so I’m very happy. Now we have a lot of confidence regained.” Camera and Charise Holloway led St. Mary’s balanced attack with 13 points apiece. Lexi Campbell and Courtney Range had 12 points each, and Onome Jemerigbe had 10. Campbell made four 3-pointers and Camera had three, all in the first half. Range had three blocked shots

and scored four points in a 14-0 run midway through the second quarter that gave the Rams a 37-12 lead.

“We’re progressing the way we should be,” Gonsalves said. “Every game was an improvement. Every game we saw a little more energy and better (defensive) rotations.” In short, the Rams made their game plan work. They used their trapping, full-court press to perfection against a Buford lineup that boasted one starter who was 6-foot-4 and another who was 6-3. Negating the Wolves’ height advantage made guard Kaela Davis, ranked the No. 2 junior in the country by ESPNHS, a non-factor despite scoring 23 points.

“That’s the biggest team I’ve ever seen. They’re huge,” Gonsalves said. “But it wasn’t a good matchup for

them because of our speed. We took advantage of that. “Usually, big players don’t have a lot of success against us, because we play such a fast-paced game.” St. Mary’s forced 25 turnovers in the first half while building a 41-16 halftime lead. In the first quarter alone, Buford had 14 of its 20 possessions end in a turnover. “It was the sort of game where we can turn that shortness and speed to power,” Camera said. “That’s the epitome of what we have. We’re short, but we’re fast and we work hard.”

ESPN HS Lists Regina Camera As TOC Standout

“Regina Camera, St. Mary's (Stockton, Calif.): From a recruiting perspective, highly skilled prospects with a solid feel for the game and how to play it with other people are becoming a valuable commodity. Camera fits that mold perfectly. The 5-8 guard pairs a polished skill set and a fairly athletic frame with an excellent feel for how to be effective on the court. Camera is a solid perimeter shooter who can put the ball on the floor and make a play for herself or others when needed. On multiple possessions on Tuesday, she made the right reads and found open teammates on drives to the basket or finished layups around defenders when it was there. Camera, a senior, should make a college coaching staff happy next year.”

Women’s Basketball: TOC St. Mary’s 78- Christ the King 69

Stockton Record

St. Mary’s returned to being St. Mary’s on Wednesday. The Rams, ranked seventh in the nation by ESPNHS, unleashed their full-time, full-court pressure defense in a 78-69 victory over Christ the King of Middle Village, N.Y., in the third round of the Nike Tournament of Champions, a game that was not as close as the score makes it seem.

St. Mary’s (3-3) forced 34 turnovers, 21 in the first half, and led by at least 10 points from the last minute

of the first quarter until the final three seconds of the game. It was the Rams’ first victory in three games in the tournament, which features the top teams and top players in the country.

“I think the first couple of days we kind of came out kind of scared and a little shell-shocked. But today everyone was like ‘Hey, we’ve had enough already,’ ” said guard Regina Camera, the only senior starter on a team that has won three consecutive state titles. “When we came out this morning, we were kind of tired again. But we were like, ‘No, we are winning today. We’re not losing. We are going to go hard and play St. Mary’s ball.’ ”

Camera had 12 points, one of five double-figure scorers in a balanced attack. Courtney Range had

16 points, Charise Holloway 15, freshman guard Bre Moore 14 and Onome Jemerigbe 11. Moore had seven consecutive points to give St. Mary’s a 26-14 lead in the first minute of the second quarter, and Camera had three assists in a span of four plays as the Rams went up 37-20 halfway through the period. She fed Holloway for two easy layups and found Range for a layup on an inbound play.

“It’s a good way to get back on the winning track. Anytime you can get a win in this bracket, it’s big,” St. Mary’s coach Tom Gonsalves said. “It was a pretty good team effort. (Moore) is playing well, and Reggie had a nice game. “If you can go 2-2 in this tournament, that’s pretty dang good.”

The Rams, play today against the winner of the game between ESPNHS No. 5 St. John’s College of Washington, D.C., and No. 12 Buford (Ga.). St. Mary’s went 2-2 here last year before winning out to claim their third California title in a row.

Women's Basketball: TOC: BOLINGBROOK 60, ST. MARY'S 39

The No. 7 Rams faced  No. 1 Bolingbrook at the Nike Tournament of Champions on Tuesday and were beaten 60-39 because the Rams could not overcome the inside play of senior Morgan Tuck who scored  35 points in the game. Senior guard Regina Camera led St. Mary's with 12 points, and junior forward Courtney Range had 10, the only players to reach double figures for the Rams,

"This is really good competition, and every little weakness we have shows up when you are young against good competition," St. Mary's coach Tom Gonsalves said, quoted in The Record. "Hopefully, this experience will make us better in the long run."

Women’s Basketball: Dr. Phillips 73,St. Mary’s 55

Stockton Record

In the Tournament of Champions the  ESPN No. 7-ranked St. Mary’s had its 29-game winning streak snapped in a 73-55 loss to Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips High in the first round of the Nike Tournament of Champions The Rams (2-1) had not lost in almost a calendar year, since going 2-2 in the Nike tournament here last year before running off 27 consecutive victories en route to their third CIF Division II state championship in a row.

Regina Camera led the Rams with 17 points, making five 3-pointers. Junior Courtney Range had 15 points and sophomore Charise Holloway added 13, but the Rams suffered an uncharacteristic cold-shooting game.  “We have to rebound now. It’s going to be a tough road ahead,” Coach Gonsalves said.

Women’s Basketball: St. Mary’s 81, Skyline 17

The Lady Rams’ press defense overwhelmed the Titans as St. Mary’s beat Skyline of Oakland 81-17. Courtney Range scored 16 points, and Unique Coleman and Charise Holloway each had13 for St. Mary’s (2-0). St. Mary’s travels to the Tournament of Champions in Arizona next week.

RamStats: 28 26 21 6—81.  Camera 3 2-2 9, Jemerigbe 4 1-2 9, Viss 1 0-0 2, Smith 1 1-2 4, B. Moore 5 1-3 11, Campbell 1 2-2 4, Range 7 2-6 16, Coleman 6 1-2 13, Holloway 6 1-2 13. 3-point goals – St. 2 (Camera, Smith). Total fouls: 15. Record: 2-0.

Women's Basketball: St. Mary’s 110, Bradshaw Chr. 46

St. Mary’s took on Bradshaw Christian, a winner of four consecutive Division V section titles, and routed them in a 110-46 season opener at Morelli Gym. Regina Camera made back-to-back 3-pointers of her total 26 ponts to spark a 15-6 run midway through the first quarter as the Rams pulled away and never trailed in the game. Women’s Basketball Featured on Sports Cover

The St. Mary’s 2011 Championship Team was featured no the cover of Girls HS Basketball that focused on the 20 prep teams in the nation to watch.  The accompanying article stated:

“St. Mary's is one of the nation's most productive and successful programs, churning out state titles almost yearly. The Rams (31-2), who split four games in the Nike Tournament of Champions, ended the season with 29 straight wins, culminated by the program's third consecutive CIF title (Division II) and seventh overall.

Coach Tom Gonsalves' team features a frenetic pace, 3-point bombs and suffocating defense. That won't change anytime soon with three starters and a host of key reserves returning.

Regina Camera is a dependable senior point guard who triggers the offense, and will be aided by juniors Onome Jemerigbe and Courtney Range. The lanky Range is a reliable perimeter player with solid ballhandling skills. Unique Coleman, Maria Lauron and Jessie Vlss provide depth in the backcourt on a team that will play four guards. Senior guards Lauren Fisher and Katie Smith also return, as does promising 5-10 sophomore forward Leticia Infante.”

Coach Tom Gonzalves Named Coach of the Year

St. Mary's women's basketball coach Tom Gonsalves was named the California Girls Coach of the Year by MaxPreps.

In naming him, MaxPreps noted: "Despite losing All-Americans Chelsea Gray and Afure Jemerigbe to graduation from last year's state champion, and No. 2 nationally ranked, team, Gonsalves and the Rams put together another fantastic season that included a third straight state championship, but at a higher level. The Rams were state champs in Division III last year but moved up to Division II for the 2011 season.

The Rams finished the season 29-2 overall with 27 straight wins and a No. 5 national ranking by the MaxPreps Freeman computer rankings."

Congratulations Coach Gonzalves!
